A small word with a serious charge. Ask ten different people what “underground” means and you’ll get ten different answers. Though its definition may be liquid, the word represents an entire enigmatic subgenre of the dance music scene — one that is the essence of New York’s Verboten nightclub. A burgeoning leader in New York’s dance music scene, the Verboten brand has paved the way for underground dance music, rapidly carving out its own space in a sometimes oversaturated market. Husband-and-wife duo John Perez and Jen Schiffer have been throwing underground parties long before the term became ubiquitous. The seasoned couple targets high quality production, international talent, and an anything-but-mainstream mentality. Finally, in 2014, Verboten set up permanent shop in Williamsburg, providing New York with a legendary venue, and an untarnished, unique haven for the deeper sounds of dance music. This Memorial Day Weekend, Verboten set its sights on Bethel Woods to bring its brand to Mysteryland USA.
